My two year old golden retriever got lost in the woods for several hours and injured the pads of his paws two days ago. The vet gave him pain meds and a spray for the pads yesterday but he is having trouble standing to use the bathroom. I pick him up and carry him outside but he just stands there and will not go. Eventually he just sits down. He wet in the floor at the vets yesterday morning and once in his bed yesterday afternoon but has not gone otherwise. What can I do to help him?
Sorry to hear about your dog’s problems. I am not sure how bad the paw injuries were and It sounds like your dog is still feeling a bit of pain. I am also not sure of the pain medications that you received, but some of the opioids such as Tramadol can cause dysphoria and make a dog feel a bit uncomfortable and give strange symptoms.
It is impossible to say without having a full physical exam to say what additional treatment could be given. Having a follow-up appointment with your veterinarian about the symptoms is the best way to find the best additional treatments (or at least trying to call them).
If it is just a minor wound that is on the paws and it is just a bit of fear causing these symptoms, you could be on the edge of it starting to improve and you might to just need to give him a little bit more time to heal. Inflammation of any traumatic injury peaks at between 48-72 hours. Afterward, symptoms of any pain should start to improve. If they are not improving or getting worse at that stage, it is always recommended to schedule a follow-up appointment with your veterinarian to ensure there isn’t something else wrong or an infection present, etc.
