My cat became infected with feline distemper virus when I bought a tree tower carrying the virus. My cat wasnt vaccinated yet and died. I have gotten rid of tower and cleaned apt with bleach to get rid of any trace of disease. I am getting a new kitten who will be vaccinated before I bring it home. Will the kitten catch the deadly virus if there is traces of virus still in my apt if its had its shots?
I’m very sorry to hear about your cat. Given that you had a cat that had panleukopenia (oftentimes called feline distemper although it is actually a parvovirus) in your apartment, you should be extra cautious. I would recommend you only bring cats home that is fully immune-competent meaning they are at least 4 months old and vaccinated before coming to your apartment. While it is unlikely they will catch anything, it is better to be safe as parvovirus can survive in an environment for over a year.
However, it is also worth saying that I am not sure how it got the disease, or how you confirmed your cat had the virus, and if it was confirmed with a lab test or just a suspected diagnosis. If you are not sure, I would recommend talking to the veterinarian that diagnosed the disease and find out how certain they were of the diagnosis as I have heard of cases that are just suspected cases in the past that were actually something else but presented the same way.
